Forecasting of Offshore Wind Power

The project

Funding

Consortium

BeFORECAST is funded by the Energy Transition Funds of the Federal Public Service Economy of the Belgian Federal Government

The project is coordinated by the von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics and will benefit from a strong collaboration between the consortium members consisting of VKI, Vrije Universiteit Brussel, KU Leuven, 3E, SABCA, and the Royal Meteorological Institute of Belgium (KMI-IRM-RMI).

The BeFORECAST project investigates the forecasting of offshore wind power in the Belgian North Sea including the effect of wind turbine and wind farm wakes on power extraction. A specific focus is placed on advanced data handling and the assimilation of modern lidar sensors mounted on wind turbines and drones.

About BeFORECAST

The ambition of BeFORECAST is to improve weather models for offshore wind power forecasting, allowing better management of the Belgian electricity grid and wind farms. This is achieved by including wind-farm wake effects, not yet available in current models, and assimilating measurements in now-and forecasting tools using machine learning on data from offshore SCADA, RADARS, SATELLITES, LIDARS, and innovative “fly-for-weather” drones.
Weather alerts are made available in real-time to wind farm and grid operators, as a tangible outcome of the project benefiting multiple stakeholders.
